21st October 2017 officially marks the closure of Souda camp. A home for the displaced who’ve fled wars and persecution only to arrive on the shores of Europe and be treated like dirt. Where so many tales of pain, heartache and friendships have been forged against the castle’s walls. For a year and seven months, Souda was the synonym of Fortress Europe.
Souda has long been earmarked to close. It is completely empty today. Finally – well done Mayor. The eyesore of your island’s voters has been swept into Vial, out of sight. Next summer, tourists will walk down the path admiring the architecture and ruins, while the atrocities of Souda will be as silent as the castle walls.
We not let these stories be forgotten and will continue our work with the Athena Centre for Women on Chios.
Action from Switzerland is a Zürich registered non-profit organisation that aims to provide effective and coordinated protection to vulnerable refugees across Europe.
We pay special attention in defending the rights and needs of the extra vulnerable displaced, especially women and girls, in order to combat exploitation and gender based violence and promote women’s rights and social inclusion.
Our projects are all developed with the objective of delivering a dynamic response to the biggest humanitarian crisis since World War
The Athena Centre for Women is based on the Greek island of Chios.
